Dynamic Radial O-Ring Gland Design

In dynamic radial o-ring applications the o-ring is squeezed radially and subjected to reciprocating motion either intermittent or continuous. Thus o-rings used in these types of applications are subjected to friction between the parts of the gland. Dynamic Radial Gland Design

O-rings and seals in dynamic radial applications should consider the following; temperatures, motion or vibration, squeeze, stretch, friction and types of friction. Columbia Engineered Rubber Inc, provides the basic o-ring gland design for theses applications. See table below. There are a number of factors that should be carefully considered when designing the gland for a dynamic o-ring seal. The chart below provides a standard set of guidelines to assist you in your design.

The elastomer selection should directly correlate with the type of application in which the o-ring seal will be used. You can review our materials/elastomer section to examine the primary qualities of the material type under consideration.

Due to the number of interacting forces, it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOUR ELASTOMER SELECTION BE RIGOROUSLY TESTED IN THE ACTUAL APPLICATION, performance assumptions must be checked so that you are certain that all variables have been carefully considered.
